About the 108 Divya Desams
The 108 Divya Desams represent a collection of highly revered temples consecrated to Lord Vishnu, distinguished by their glorification in the hymns of the Alvars, the eminent saint-poets of Tamil Nadu. These sacred sanctuaries are geographically dispersed across India and Nepal, with each site possessing profound significance within the Vaishnavite tradition. Pilgrimage to these Divya Desams is regarded as a spiritual undertaking of immense depth, fostering a profound connection between devotees and the divine.
Understanding Divya Desams
The appellation “Divya Desam” is derived from two Sanskrit terms: “Divya,” signifying “divine,” and “Desam,” denoting “place” or “temple.” Collectively, the term translates to “Divine Places” dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu.
The twelve Alvars, who flourished between the 6th and 9th centuries CE, composed the Naalayira Divya Prabandham, an extensive anthology of 4000 Tamil verses eulogizing these specific temples. Through their devotional compositions, these 108 temples attaineda distinctive and elevated status within the Sri Vaishnava theological framework.
